Ready to embark on your WWOOF journey this summer?
Here’s How to Get Started:
🌎 1. Choose Your Adventure: Reflect on which region or state you’d like to explore. Opportunities range from the sunny fields of the West Coast to the picturesque farms of the East Coast. You don’t have to travel far—there may be local farmers ready to welcome you.
🌱 2. Join the Community: Sign up for a WWOOF-USA membership and create a profile highlighting your goals, interests, and availability. Introduce yourself to potential hosts and explain why you’re excited to visit their farm.
👋🏽 3. Reach Out to Hosts: Browse through the list of 1,200 hosts across the USA and contact those that interest you. Introduce yourself, explain your interest, and ask questions. Clear and respectful communication is key.
🥾 4. Prepare for Your Adventure: Ensure you’re ready for life on the farm. Pack suitable clothing and gear (ask your host for recommendations), share dietary needs or medical requirements with your host, stay in touch, and get ready to embrace farm life.
✨ 5. Embrace the Experience: Upon arrival, open your heart and mind to the experiences that await you. Dive in, learn new skills, and build lasting connections with your fellow WWOOFers and hosts. Savor every moment of your adventure.
& here’s a few more tips on How to Prepare:
Before you go:
- 🌻 Contacting your host: Send a 4-6 sentence intro about yourself and your skills. It’s okay if you have no experience! You can even ask the host to do a call or FaceTime. This way you can get a feel for how they are and ensure clarification on what your experience will be like. You can ask them questions like “What will the average day look like?” “What projects will be working on?” “Will I be engaged in activities independently or alongside other WWOOFer’s and you as the host?” “Will there be other WWOOFers to socialize with at the time of my visit?” “What skills will I learn?” “Will most meals be shared or some separate?” “How is the living arrangement set up?” “Anything specific I should bring? (work boots, gloves, etc.)”
- 👀 Check Reviews: Reviews can help you get another perspective on how things will be there. It’s important to gather as much info as you can if you are particular about finding the perfect place 😁 All hosts are different, so lots of communication beforehand is great to make sure everyone’s expectations are the same
- 🕰️ Duration: It’s up to you and the host how long you plan to WWOOF for. You can always start with a three-week trip; you can extend if needed.
- 🎒 Packing List: We always say, the less the better! But there’s a balance. It is nice to travel light and be selective of the clothes you bring. Find a comfortable outfit our two that will be suitable for the weather and for getting dirty 😉 Bring undergarments and socks for a week, shirts, sweaters, a work and boots that you don’t mind getting (maybe) muddy, 2-3 pants, night clothes, and one outfit for going out. Don’t forget your toothbrush, water bottle, toothpaste, waterproof boots, shampoo, soap, grooming accessories, favorite snacks, and reminders of home. You can also ask your host if they can provide anything like work boots, gloves, or jackets. This way you can lighten your load, or prepare any clothes you’ll need to get ahead of time.
While you’re there:
- 🍴 Diet Flexibility: Be flexible with your diet, avoid wasting food, and ensure everyone eats before seconds. Make sure you communicate ahead of time if you have any special dietary restrictions.
- ☀️Attitude: Get excited! Have an open mind. Be ready to share with your host, as they will likewise welcome you into their world and share their knowledge.
- 🧡 Respect Locals: Be an active observer and respect the locals’ way of life.
- 💭 Ask Questions: Don’t feel shy. A lot of folks WWOOFing for the first time may have no knowledge of organic agriculture. And that’s totally okay! You are there to learn, so feel free to ask as many questions as you’d like.
- 🌾 Self-Care: Take time for self-care and rest during your off time. Enjoy exploring the local area and culture.
